Positive: Lovely hosts, who are flexible with some things if they have not been described precisely in the advertisement (eg towels) and who went out of their way to optimize out comfort. Big space, 3 bedrooms all individualized, nice backyard space with comfy backyard furniture on soft synthetic grass, and a parking spot on the road in front of the house. Liked the coffee and coffee maker. Near a gem of a medieval village with good restaurants. A word for non-European travellers about details that are not necessarily downsides, but should be known before booking - 1. European shower only (long hose with spray head in a bathtub) 2. The AC is only in the main room. The halls between the bedrooms are long so AC doesn’t trickle into bedrooms - you must sleep with the window open and fan on in the summer. 3. Owners only make up the number of beds for the number of travellers and assume that parents sleep in the same bed (two singles pushed together with one sheet over it). Unlike the ad, they do not charge for sheets. When my husband and I needed to sleep in different rooms to support different temperature needs, the hosts accommodated readily. But just make sure you clearly request the number of beds to be made up. 4. Hosts will ask you for your traveller’s/house insurance - we don’t have this, and didn’t get the message about it until we were already out of country but hosts told us it was only expected for French travellers so we were off the hook. 5. Unlike a lot of VRBOs and AirBnBs, there are zero “leftover” supplies, which makes cooking and eating-in a challenge. The hosts provide coffee and sugar and bottled water. Bring your own salt/pepper, oils/vinegar, herbs, soap, shampoo etc. 6. Bring a personal cheque or bank draft for the €500 deposit. They will hold it and not cash or take an e-transfer. Although it is in the policy, I had not properly noticed the need for the deposit. As a non-European, we had to take out cash.
Negative: 1. While the hosts waived the towel fee for us due to a contradiction in the advert, which we appreciated, €15 to rent a hand and bath towel is highway robbery. 2. All of the above noted items, in themselves not egregious, made this the most complicated rental we’ve ever had and we travel a lot in Europe using VRBO, AirBnB, and booking.com, and are highly conscientious guests. Would probably only consider this home if the plan is to stay for more than a week.
