For a slice of culture, head to the amazing Bardini Museum, home to a brilliant collection of classic sculptures. There is also the Gallery of Modern Art that sits in the Pitti Palace (former home of the powerful Medici family) and showcases a large collection of paintings and sculptures from the 19th and 20th Century. Between the Via Maggio and Piazza Pitti, you’ll find small streets full of little artisan workshops, where you’ll see everything from jewellery to books and shoes to musical instruments being made by hand. Buying souvenirs from these shops will cost you less and allow you to support the craftsmen and women of the city. No visit to any neighbourhood in Florence is complete without a trip to one of the many incredible churches that define the city. In Oltrarno, one of the treasures of the area is the Cappella Brancacci, where you’ll find artwork by Masolino da Panicale, Masaccio and Filippino Lippi. Much of the rest of the basilica was destroyed by fire in the 1700s, but this small chapel survived, along with its beautiful 15th Century frescos. The two restaurants that are most popular with tourists are Gustapizza and Casalinga, but while the food is good, both of these institutions suffer a little from being tourist traps, becoming more of an attraction than a restaurant. For a really great meal, try Magazzino for their excellent Fiorentina steaks, or Trattoria Cammillo where you’ll find a mix of Florentine and Bolognese dishes. Essenziale is perhaps the best place to sample inventive and original modern Tuscan cuisine. Order the tasting menu to enjoy a good range of the exceptional cooking of the chef, Simone Cipriani. You won’t find Cavolo Nero in many tourist guides, but this charming little trattoria has a back garden with a few tables which are the perfect place to relax and unwind away from the busy streets of the city. Enjoy a glass of wine from the extensive wine list and then tuck into some antipasti. Finally, one of the best places to enjoy an aperitivo drink is Zoe’s, where you’ll be able to enjoy a carefully created cocktail in a relaxed atmosphere before your evening meal. Alternatively, head further east along the southern bank of the River Arno to Il Rifrullo, where you can enjoy your aperitivo on the terrace overlooking the river.
